Professor Gani Joses Yoroms

Gani Joses Yoroms, Professor of Political Science and immediate past Provost of the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies (CSRS) at the National Defence College, Nigeria, from October 2016 to August 2017. He teaches Politics and International Studies at Bingham University Karu, Nigeria and Nile University of Nigeria. His research interests are in Defence and Foreign Policy Studies, Political Economy and Geopolitics, Conflict and Security Sector Governance; Human Security and Development; Security, Human Rights and Rule of Law.  An SSRC-MacArthur Fellow at Watson Institute, Brown University, USA 1994, Yoroms bagged a PhD in Political Science (International Relations) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria in 2002. He had hitherto attended professional training programmes at the University of Witwatersrand, UK Defence Academy/Cranfield University, and CoESPUS Course, Italy among others.

Professor Yoroms was a consultant with BOOZ Allen Hamilton/ USAFRICOM, USA, Stuttgart, Germany, August 2009, working on Nigerian Military Project; and with CRISE, Oxford University, UK on ‘Inequality, Cultural Identities and Militancy in Nigeria’ CRISE Project, January 2007.

He has participated in the research activities of the   Programme on Federal Studies (PEFs), University of Ibadan where he worked on Conflicts in Taraba State, Nigeria. In addition, he was a member of a team of experts on Electoral Security Studies that developed and produced the manual on Electoral Violence Mitigation (EVM) in Nigeria for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)_ Electoral Institute (TEI), Abuja, from 2015 to 2016.

He was also a member of Nigeria Vision 2020, and has also served as a Chair, Security Sub-Committee of the Thematic Committee on Defence, Peace and Security of the Technical Working Group of the Medium Team National Planning experts on the Nigerian Agenda 2050. He is currently on the accreditation panel of National Universities Commission for the accreditation and assessment of courses in Nigerian universities.Â

Professor Yoroms has been an external examiner to National Institute, Kuru, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, University of Cape Town, University of Abuja, among others. He is member of International Political Science Association, Nigerian Political Science Association and Nigerian Chapter of African Centre of Strategic Studies, Washington DC, among others.

He has served as ECOWAS Regional Research Coordinator between 2017 and 2020. Part of the regional research activities he conducted among the ECOWAS Centres of Excellence (National Defence College, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Accra; and the EMP Bamako, Mali) was the Farmers-Herders Research Project.  Currently, he coordinators and chairs the National Defence College Strategic Work Plan on Academic   Research and Development.

Recently, he was the Chair of Security Sub-Committee of the Defence, Security and Peace Thematic Committee for National Development Plan 2025 and 2050.
